Storm Irene to bring high winds and more rain

Met Éireann has issued a number of status yellow weather alerts - warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds across the country.

There is a potential for higher amounts on hills and mountains and localised spot flooding is possible.

A Status Yellow Rainfall Warning is in place for Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford.

While winds of up to 65 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour are expected in Atlantic coastal areas between 9 am this morning and 6 o'clock tomorrow morning. It will become windy as southerly winds back southeast and increase strong and gusty with very strong winds developing near some coasts during the afternoon. Showers will follow for the rest of the day, some heavy.

"On Tuesday morning, rain will gradually clear eastwards".

The wind warning is in place for the whole of Ireland, it will be valid from 9am on Monday until 6am on Tuesday.

Met Éireann said today will be dry and bright in many places at first this morning.

"Generally cloudy and misty with further outbreaks of showery rain, though a few bright spells possibly breaking through at times".

The Irish weather service has forecast temperatures as high as 18°C for Thursday, but it'll be wet and windy before then.

The weather is set to remain unsettled for the remainder of the week, with a mixture of good sunny spells and rain. Day time temperatures will range from 13 to 17 degrees, warmest in the midlands.
