Storm system likely spewed 11 tornadoes in Arkansas, agency reports

LAVACA, Ark. - At 6:23 p.m. CDT on Sunday, the National Weather Service in Tulsa confirmed a fifth Tornado touched down near Lavaca, Arkansas, on Friday, which was classified an EF-1 with winds between 85 and 95 miles per hour.

The Weather Service forecasts a slight chance of more rain Wednesday night, then highs of about 80 by the weekend.

In less than a minute, about 6 homes were damaged, several smaller buildings or garages destroyed, a truck was flipped over, and about 50 trees were either uprooted or snapped.

Earlier Sunday, a tornado watch went into effect for 26 counties in Southwest and central Virginia.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida has confirmed an EF-1 hit Decatur County on Sunday.

Twenty tornadoes have been reported so far this year in Arkansas, the weather service said.

By the end ot the severe weather event, more that three dozen reports were submitted that spanned from tornadoes, wind damage, flooding, to hail. There were no injuries from that brief storm. If all of the damage seems to be unidirectional, all blown down in the same direction, they are likely to determine it was created by straight-line winds.

"It was very unnerving to be in a vehicle out in the storm", Turner said.

As Minnesota began digging out from a mid-April snowstorm, one North Carolina city was cleaning up the damage Monday from a deadly tornado spawned from the same vast storm system that pushed across the USA and ended with drenching rains in the Northeast.

According to a post-survey report issued by the weather service, two dogs in that neighborhood were "either displaced or lofted over 100 yards when their respective pens were destroyed".

Rainfall was heaviest northwest of Richmond, which is causing the James River to rise.
