Substitute teacher ran classroom 'fight club' at high school, CT police say

Substitute teacher ran classroom 'fight club' at high school, CT police say

Fish is accused of running a fight club during class time at Montville High School.

It's not clear if any action will be taken.

Resident Carol MacPherson said, "Not appropriate". More than that, the substitute teacher was sacked from the Montville High School for a similar incident. Fish was arrested after Montville Police Department conducted a month's-long investigation into the allegations.

Fish told WTIC that he was wrong, and was just trying to be friends with the students. It wasn't until December - when police started investigating - that he saw other video clips, he said.

'If I had known what it was doing to the kids I would have done something completely different.

The Day reports that school officials were alerted to the alleged fights happening in Fish's classroom on October 10 and fired him that same day.

Fish couldn't be reached for comment Friday morning.

"The truth is I'm an idiot and wanted to befriend them", Fish said, according to the warrant. "I will admit that I did at one point egg them on, '" the police report said. Fish, who has been charged with reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor, and breach of peace, is out on $75,000 bail and is set to appear in court in early May.

According to local reports, Fish oversaw at least three scheduled fights last October involving five male students ages 14 to 16.

The boys who squared off seemed to be unevenly matched, police said, with one much smaller than the other.

Fish said he is seeking treatment for PTSD. He was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation, the warrant says. "He can say what he wants but that should not have been happening in the school, in the classroom".

Police said that video "clearly showed a classroom and two students swinging full force at each other's heads with open-handed strikes".

Levesque said on Friday that the school system's lawyer advised against handing over the data without being served with a warrant. In one, the teacher stands between two boys, separating them with outstretched arms.

In a statement to The Washington Post, Levesque said he understood some police were frustrated that "we didn't notify them of this so called "student slapping horseplay" in a timely fashion". The fight didn't restart because the school bell rang.

Ryan Avery Fish, 23, told police he only wanted to be liked by the students.

He has denied facilitating the fights, according to the police report.

When asked why he thought it was OK to let students fight in his class, Fish said: "I didn't think it was OK". "It gets into a mob mentality, and that is absolutely scary".

'I really did and I thought that that would help me get to them.
