Texas, Arizona Sending Troops to Border

Texas, Arizona Sending Troops to Border

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said about 150 Guard members would deploy next week.

While some states that don't border Mexico have said they would send Guard members if asked, like Nevada and OR, others, like North Dakota, have said they would send troops if asked.

This comes after President Trump on Wednesday formally ordered the Pentagon and Homeland Security to deploy National Guard troops to the Mexican border to stem illegal crossings and drug trafficking. David M. Church, an Army National Guard commander during Operation Jump Start, said the operation's "sudden formation" gave the National Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection "little time for preparation, acquaintance, and coordination".

The office of California Governor Jerry Brown did not respond to questions about whether it would deploy troops. President Trump has issued a decree for the National Guard to guard the 3,200 kilometer border between the United States and Mexico. This leaves open the possibility that California's Brown could turn him down.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis approved using Defence Department money to pay for as many as 4,000 National Guard personnel to perform border security missions on Friday evening.

In addition to troops, the Guard said it would send ground surveillance vehicles and light and medium aircraft.

The memo set out that troops would not carry out law enforcement activities without the defense secretary's approval and would be armed only in "circumstances that might require self-defense".

Previous deployments include Barack Obama sending 1,200 members to the border eight years ago and George W Bush sending 6,000 back in 2006.

Mr Trump has said he wants to deploy at least 2,000 to combat "the lawlessness that continues at our southern border", suggesting he wants to use the military there until progress is made on his proposed border wall. That's erased a decline for which Trump repeatedly took credit. The caravan of largely Central American migrants never meant to reach the US border, according to organizer Irineo Mujica.

DHS Secretary Nielsen stated that the president purchased that the installation mainly because "we have been in a crisis point" with illegal immigration policy.

Notifications for troops will go in the mail Saturday telling troops they need to report as early as next week, Norris said.

Mr Trump wants illegal immigrants to be held in detention while they wait to hear if they will be deported, instead of being freed.

"It's not a matter of security", Tony Martinez, the mayor of Brownsville, Texas, told the Times. Federal law prohibits the military from being used to enforce laws, meaning troops can not actually participate in immigration enforcement.

Texas already has 100 Guardsmen deployed as part of an existing state mission at the border.
