Despite the mistake, Pence in his speech said that it was time for the region to do more to isolate President Nicolas Maduro, who he said was single-handedly responsible for the humanitarian crisis plaguing the oil-rich nation.

"We agree to unequivocally reject the presence in Lima, within the framework of the 8th Summit of the Americas Civil Society Forum's preparatory process, of citizens of Cuban origin, and mercenary organizations, at the service of foreign governments and institutions, that have no recognition or legitimacy whatsoever, which seek to overturn the internal order, the social wellbeing, and the political system we have chosen in a sovereign, democratic manner", states the final declaration approved by the 2nd Cuban Civil Society Forum "Thinking America".

Pence, meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of a summit in Peru, said President Donald Trump had "made it clear to the world" that the United States "will not tolerate the use of chemical weapons against men, women and children".

Trump said on Thursday the NAFTA talks between Canada, Mexico and the USA were "coming along great" and "we're getting pretty close to a deal". Leaders also discuss common policy issues, affirm shared values and commit to concerted actions at the national and regional levels.
