Trump Calls FBI Search Of Lawyer's Office 'An Attack On Our Country'

Federal prosecutors in NY executed search warrants and seized documents and other materials based on a referral from Mueller's team. They also seized his electronic devices, the source said.

The president railed against Jeff Sessions, the attorney general, for recusing himself in the Russian Federation investigation, and he blasted the FBI for failing to investigate Hillary Clinton "where there are crimes". The New York District Attorney's office and Mueller's Office of the Special Counsel also declined comment. Instead, the source said, this was a court-authorized search, which means there was sufficient probable cause for a federal judge to agree that a search involving the president's personal attorney could occur without any advance notice to Cohen.

Last week, Trump was asked by reporters during a gaggle on Air Force One whether he knew about Cohen's $130,000 payment to Daniels.

The possible payment, which Trump has claimed he has no knowledge of, has also brought questions on its legality, and whether the payment by Cohen constituted as an undisclosed campaign contribution.

FBI agents seized documents using several warrants after the case was referred in part by Mueller to NY federal prosecutors, Cohen attorney Stephen Ryan wrote in an email.

As for today's raid on Cohen's office, it is "a whole new level of unfairness".

"We have been in contact with Federal authorities regarding their execution of a warrant relating to Mr Cohen", the firm's statement said. "These activities do not relate to the firm and we are in full cooperation". The seized records also included communications between Trump and Cohen, which would likely require a review to protect attorney-client conversations, the Times reported.

"Mr. Cohen has been placed in the crosshairs by Mr. Trump", Avenatti told Fox News on Monday.

Cohen has previously said he paid $130,000 to Stormy Daniels, who has alleged a sexual encounter with Trump.

Michael Cohen has been in the spotlight in recent weeks since it was revealed that he had paid $130,000 (€105,000) to porn actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 United States presidential election, which she said was done to keep her silent about an alleged affair she had with Trump.

The Washington Post explained that federal prosecutors would have been required to get approval from Justice Department officials before conducting the raid.

It's "an attack on our country in a true sense, an attack on what we all stand for", Trump said of the raids, which were first reported by The New York Times.

Mueller reports to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Rosenstein then will determine whether to allow Mueller to proceed or to assign the matter to another US attorney or another part of the Justice Department.

The Times reported the search doesn't appear to be directly linked to Mueller's investigation into whether Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 USA presidential election or whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Stormy Daniels" Lawyer Michael Avenatti Won't Stop Until Trump And Cohen "Come Clean'"An enormous amount of misplaced faith has been placed on MC's [Michael Cohen] shoulders IMO". "He has been set-up to take the fall".

Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort has not been charged with any crimes related to the presidential contest, but faces multiple counts of criminal wrongdoing in connection with years of lobbying efforts in Ukraine for one-time Ukrainian strongman Viktor Yanukovych.

The search does not appear to be directly related to Mueller's investigation, but likely resulted from information he had uncovered and gave to prosecutors in NY. There were approximately a dozen Federal Bureau of Investigation agents involved, the source said. "Many people have said you should fire him".

Cohen has said that he paid the $130,000 out of his own pocket and that neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign were involved in the transaction.
