Trump's attorneys ask to review documents seized from Cohen in Federal Bureau of Investigation raid

Trump's attorneys ask to review documents seized from Cohen in Federal Bureau of Investigation raid

They've reportedly asked a judge to block Trump's own Justice Department from seeing evidence about Cohen, Trump's private lawyer, that the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized in a raid last week, reports Bloomberg.

Adult film star Stormy Daniels will attend a Monday hearing for President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen, the actress's lawyer said Sunday.

In response, prosecutors filed a memo explaining that they took great pains to avoid violating the attorney-client privilege in the case and had been investigating Cohen for months for a range of possible crimes. They said Cohen has told at least one witness that his only client was Trump.

Trump's lawyers say any rush to review the documents for privilege "makes clear that the taint team will not zealously protect the President's privilege".

The judge in the Stewart case cited "extraordinary circumstances", namely that Stewart's files contained information related to clients unrelated to the case, and that Stewart shared an office with other lawyers, and some of the files may have involved their clients.

"Unlike a search of a traditional law office, the information gathered thus far in the investigation suggests that the overwhelming majority of evidence seized during the searches will not be privileged material, but rather will relate to Cohen's business dealings".

Court papers indicate President Trump's personal attorney has been the subject of a months-long investigation and that numerous crimes he is suspected of have "nothing to do with his work as an attorney"; chief White House correspondent John Roberts reports.

Both McDougal and Daniels say they had affairs with a married Trump, which the president has denied.

Cohen arranged a US$1.6-million payment to secure the silence of a former Playboy model who said she became pregnant by Broidy, a person familiar with the matter said Friday.

The letter demanded Trump and Cohen's lawyers be allowed to decide which items seized are protected by attorney-client privilege before criminal prosecutors see them. Joanna Hendon appeared for the president at Friday's hearing, telling Wood that Trump had "an acute interest" in the handling of the seized materials. Before that, he tweeted that "attorney-client privilege is dead" and lashed out at the investigation, calling it a "witch hunt".

The President's attorneys called the federal searches of Cohen's home, office, hotel room and cellphones last Monday "an operation disquieting to lawyers, clients, citizens, and commentators alike".

The next phase is a battle over the procedures involving who may review the materials seized by FBI investigators last week. He wrote "I have many (too many!) lawyers and they are probably wondering when their offices, and even homes, are going to be raided with everything, including their phones and computers, taken". All lawyers are deflated and concerned!'

Cohen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Prosecutors say that material should be reviewed by a team of Justice Department lawyers independent from the investigation who could identify records that should remain confidential.
