United States launches 'precision srikes' on Syria as UK, France join in

Trump's statement on USA policy toward Syria came after days of speculation that the us would launch a strike against Syria in retaliation for an apparent chemical weapons attack last weekend that killed scores of civilians.

This strike does not come as a surprise as Trump tweeted a number of tweets on Thursday on the issue.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement that a target of the strike was the Syrian government's "clandestine chemical arsenal".

Syrian state TV broadcast images of the destruction at the site, including piles of rubble and a burnt vehicle.

Two other chemical weapons facilities near Homs were targeted, the Pentagon said. It is not about regime change.

He said the targets selected by US, British and French officials were meant to minimize civilian casualties.

The strikes had been flagged so far in advance that Syria and its allies had plenty of notice to evacuate the likely targets of civilians and assets, possibly also including key components of the chemical weapons program, leaving it unclear how much of an impact they would have. White said she could not go into detail about that evidence.

Syria has condemned the "shameful" stance of the rulers of Qatar in supporting the recent US-led airstrikes on Damascus and allowing a Qatari airbase to be used for a part of the operation. Overall, we launched 105 missiles.

"We are not scared of America's missiles". "Instead of weakening the government, it only made it stronger", he said.

Iran and Russian Federation have backed Assad in his effort to defeat rebels that sought to overthrow him since he moved to suppress a groundswell of protests at the height of the Arab Spring movement.

Describing the strike as a deterrent, Trump said the U.S. would maintain pressure on Syria until the Assad regime suspends use of chemical weapons.

France's foreign minister is threatening further missile strikes against Syria if the Syrian government uses chemical weapons again. "We don't want to get into a fight with them, they don't want to get in a fight with us", he said. "The American president, the French president and the British prime minister are criminals".

Russian Federation resoundingly criticized the airstrikes as a violation of global law and warned that the airstrikes "will not be left without consequences".

The strikes, a joint operation between the USA, United Kingdom and France, targeted three locations associated with the production and storage of chemical weapons: a scientific research center; a storage center for sarin and its precursor components; and a chemical weapons storage facility and command post, according to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford.

President Donald Trump says the United States has "launched precision strikes" on targets associated with Syrian chemical weapons program.

"Mission Accomplished!" President Trump tweeted Saturday morning, after what he declared as a "perfectly executed strike".

NATO was not involved in the operation, but NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Saturday in a statement that he supported the strikes.

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis on Friday night said the assault was a "one-time shot", so long as Assad does not repeat his use of chemical weapons.

A draft United Nations Security Council resolution by Russian Federation, seen by Reuters, hoped to condemn "the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic by the USA and its allies in violation of worldwide law and the UN Charter".

Russian President Vladimir Putin listens during a meeting with Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev in Moscow, Russia, Monday, April 9, 2018. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called the airstrikes a "military crime", according to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency.
