UNSC Meets at Russia's Request to Discuss Situation in Syria

The Post report states that the sanctions are under "serious consideration" but Trump is reluctant to sign off on them unless Russian Federation gives him "another triggering event" to do so.

Chemical weapons inspectors in Syria will be permitted to visit the site of an alleged chemical attack on Wednesday, Russia has said.

The reports came just a few days after the United States, Britain and France conducted airstrikes targeting alleged chemical weapons facilities in Syria, in retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack that they blamed on the Syrian government.

The timing of the attack was also bewildering, the Russian diplomat said, adding that the Syrian government had absolutely no reason to gas its own citizens when the city was already nearly liberated from the militants.

MPs are considering Parliament's role in approving military action in Syria after Theresa May authorised air strikes without consulting them.

As the fallout from the American, French and British strikes continues, here is a list of the 34 chemical attacks - the majority the result of chlorine use - confirmed to have taken place inside Syria since 2013 and before the latest atrocity in Douma, according to the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic.

However, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the United Nations has "provided the necessary clearances for the OPCW team to go about its work in Douma".

One America News Network (OANN), which normally unabashedly kowtows to President Donald Trump, recently claimed the suspected chemical attack on Syria by Assad regime was staged.

The global team has been in the country since Saturday, but has not been allowed to visit Douma.

Syrian state media said on Tuesday that investigators had entered the town outside Damascus.

"These strikes don't necessarily resolve anything but I think they were important", he said.

The U.S., United Kingdom and France accuse President Bashar Al-Assad of carrying out the April 7 attack, which killed dozens of people.

The United States has raised concerns that Russian Federation might have tampered with evidence on the scene - a charge Russian Federation vehemently denies - and it remains to be seen what investigators will find and what they'll have access to.

- New sanctions on Russian Federation over the chemical weapons attack in Syria are still under consideration despite the appearance they have been shelved, White House officials said Tuesday. There was no comment from Israel, which frequently carries out airstrikes in Syria but rarely acknowledges them. The Syrian government and Russian Federation have denied using chemical weapons and accused rebels, with Western backing, of using such weapons or faking such an attack.

Kenneth Ward, US ambassador to the OPCW, raised fears that Syria's ally Russian Federation may have sent soldiers to hide evidence after at least 40 people including children died.

The commander said the new offensive would target Islamic State and Nusra Front militants in Yarmouk camp and al-Hajar al-Aswad district. Israel did not confirm or deny the allegations.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov also said the mission was not allowed in because it lacked approval from the United Nation's Department for Safety and Security.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the strikes were a "clear message" to Assad, Russia and Iran that chemical weapons use is not acceptable and that the allies would not stand idle.
