US, allies fire on syrian targets

Syrian state television said government air defence systems were responding to "the American aggression" and aired video of missiles being fired into a dark night sky.

The United States, France and Britain launched military strikes in Syria to punish President Bashar Assad for an apparent chemical attack against civilians and to deter him from doing it again, but also stirred up angry responses from Syria's allies and ignited a debate over whether the attacks were justified. It says the government evaluated publicly available information from non-governmental organizations and other sources as well as unspecified French intelligence.

The Russian military had vowed to respond to any attack, and Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration had repeatedly warned that Trump was taking America down a risky path. The Syrian government has accused Washington of seeking to use it as a pretext for attacking. "Not one of the cruise missiles released by the USA and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of Russian air defences protecting facilities in Tartus and Hmeimim", the ministry said.

The report, which provided a broad outline of the Syrian government-backed offensive supported by Russian Federation on the eastern Ghouta region over recent months, also said French services had assessed that not all Syrian government chemical stockpiles and capacities had been declared to the United Nations. The targets of that strike included Syrian aircraft, aircraft shelters, petroleum and logistical storage facilities, ammunition supply bunkers, air defense systems and radar.

Russia's Ministry of Defence said Saturday that none of the Western strikes in Syria had hit areas near to Russia's air and naval bases.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denounced a strike on Syria launched by the United States and its allies as an "act of aggression" that will exacerbate humanitarian catastrophe in Syria. Putin added that the strike had a "destructive influence on the entire system of worldwide relations".

Syrian TV showed police waving Syrian flags apparently on the edge of the town just east of Damascus, and said the "terrorist presence" in Douma will end "in a few hours". He criticized the USA and its allies for launching the strike without waiting for inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog to visit the area. "These are not the actions of a man; they are crimes of a monster instead", said Trump.

President Trump had earlier said: "We are prepared to sustain this response until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents". "Syria continues to engage in and provide a base for murderous actions, including those of Iran, that put its territory, its forces and its leadership at risk", the official said.

A senior administration official said "what you've seen tonight is not the end of the U.S. response".

Israel has issued several stern warnings of late about Iran's increased involvement along its border in Syria in Lebanon.

Johnson tweeted Saturday that he welcomed the news of the military strike against major chemical weapons facilities in Syria in concert with "our US and French allies".

"The goal of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons", he said in a televised address from the White House.

May authorized the strikes without a vote from Parliament, which has been in recess.

He also warned Russian Federation and Iran, describing them as "the two governments most responsible for supporting, equipping, and financing" the Assad regime in a country embroiled in a deadly Civil War since 2011.

The Syrian government and Russian Federation, its key ally, have vehemently denied involvement and accused rebels in Douma of fabricating the chemical attack claims. Another official said that targets were being carefully selected with the aim of damaging Assad's ability to conduct further gas attacks.

Shortly after Trump began a White House address to announce the action, large explosions were heard in the Syrian capital Damascus, signaling a new chapter in a brutal 7-year-old civil war.

Mattis said he was not aware of any USA losses, and added, "Right now we have no additional attacks planned".
