Vampire Diaries Actor to Star in Netflix's Vampire Series V-Wars

According to Comic Book, IDW Entertainment President David Ozer cited Ian Somerhalder as the flawless choice for the V-Wars adaptation, revealing his work on The Vampire Diaries has offered the actor a "keen understanding" of the vampire genre.

Somerhalder will portray Dr. Luther Swann in the series who enters into a world of horror when his best friend, Michael Fayne, transforms into a vampire after contracting a mysterious disease. That disease spreads wide, causing more people to transform, and society to fracture. Swann races against time to understand what's happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Somerhalder has been cast in the latest original series for Netflix, V-Wars.

Netflix and Ian Somerhalder are ready to fight the V-Wars. "We are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring the multifaceted world that Jonathan Maberry created to audiences worldwide". The order comes as another IDW property, the beloved Locke and Key, is awaiting word on a new home after Hulu's surprising pass on the pilot. William Laurin and Glenn Davis have been tapped as showrunners. High Park's Eric Birnberg and Thomas Walden will exec produce alongside IDW Entertainment president David Ozer, IDW CEO Ted Adams and Marada Pictures' Games Gibb.

There is now no expected release date for V-Wars, but it's highly likely that Netflix will release the entire first season at once, as the company does with most of its original programming. Somerhalder is attached to star and also direct the drama, which was developed as straight-to-series in 2014 as the initial project under IDW Entertainment and then-eOne TV's first-look co-production deal. Brad Turner of 24 will direct and executive-produce.

A year after the end of The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder is returning to the vampire drama genre.

No word yet on when V-Wars will begin filming, but Screen Rant will keep you updated with all the casting and filming news. The actor previously starred as an immortal in eight seasons of The CW's The Vampire Diaries.
