VAR chaos strikes again as Bundesliga referee hands Mainz 'half-time' penalty

Kempf, who conceded the spot kick, was substituted at halftime.

Defeat meant Freiburg took Mainz's place in the relegation zone due to an inferior goal difference. The referee then reversed his call and awarded Mainz a penalty and had to call the players from both teams back onto the field.

A freakish video assistant referee (VAR) decision caused mayhem in a Bundesliga game on Monday night when two teams were ordered back on to the pitch at half time because the referee chose to award a penalty after watching a replay on TV.

A mistake from Schwolow in the final minutes allowed De Blasis to seal the home side's first win since January.

The Freiburg players were understandably outraged, in stark contrast to Mainz midfielder Pablo de Blasis who couldn't believe his luck as he gleefully stepped up and fired the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the most bewildering of ways.

"We're not going out", said Streich as he led his confused players back into the changing room.

In the second half, an error from Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow gifted Mainz a second goal when he passed the ball directly to Robin Quaison in the penalty area.

Supporters also forced the game to be paused by throwing rolls of toilet paper on to the pitch as a protest against the Bundesliga's introduction of matches on Monday nights.

Before the game began, both sets of fans waved signs reading "against Monday games" and a cocophony of whistles and vuvuzelas provided a constant soundtrack throughout the 90 minutes.

The man in the middle then received a call from his video assistant, instructing him to check the incident. After the stewards cleared the paper strands, they threw another round they held back in reserve to delay the second half even further.
