White House says Trump can fire Mueller, isn't

US President Donald Trump believes that he has the power to fire Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, who is heading the probe into the links between his campaign and Kremlin efforts to influence the 2016 election, the White House has said. He told reporters that federal authorities had "broke in to the office" and he called it "a disgraceful situation" and "a total witch hunt". The president's diatribes about Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Mr. Rosenstein and the existence of the special counsel have, for most of the White House aides, become a dependable part of the fabric of life working for this president. The combative U.S. president had been expected in Peru for the Summit of the Americas, where he was likely to face protests and awkward meetings with leaders who have bristled at his repeated portrayal of Latino immigrants as rapists and thugs.

In his Opening Monologue, Sean Hannity said Special Counsel Robert Mueller "declared war" on President Donald Trump and is leading a now-"rogue" investigation. Most senators asked challenging questions in an often tense hearing, probing Zuckerberg as to whether Facebook would be open to more federal regulation or pointing out how Zuckerberg himself values his personal privacy in a way that his social network may not.

Trump has relentlessly attacked Sessions, Rosenstein and the Justice Department.

In addition, the New York Times is reporting Tuesday night that Trump seriously considered firing Mueller back in early December when he became furious over news of Mueller issuing subpoenas for the president's banking information and told advisors that he meant to shut the investigation down. It has been previously reported that he sought to fire the special counsel last June but backed down when one of his lawyers for the investigation, Don McGahn, threatened to resign.

Mr. Rosenstein has repeatedly said that he will refuse any order to fire Mr. Mueller unless he decides the special counsel committed misconduct.

Now, Trump's longtime lawyer Michael Cohen - who holds secrets about numerous president's personal and financial dealings - is in the crosshairs.

The president's lawyers would quickly discover the news reports were not accurate and that the subpoenas were connected to the family business of Jared Kushner.

The White House has consistently said Trump denies the affair.

Acutely conscious of the threat Mueller's investigation poses, Trump has openly discussed ways to shut it down. Each time, he has been convinced by his lawyers and advisers that taking the step would only exacerbate his problems. Even at moments of great uncertainty about what Trump will do next, congressional Republican leaders have opted not to further agitate him.

On Tuesday, Sanders said Trump believes the raid on Cohen's office went "too far", but she also said that it's a separate investigation from Mueller's probe.

Mr. Trump's frustrations have tended to flare up in response to developments in the news, especially accounts of appearances of witnesses, whom Mr. Trump feels were unfairly and aggressively approached by investigators. Again, they found nothing. Some of Trump's legal advisers believe him conflicted, since he is both a potential witness in the Russian Federation investigation and wrote the memo that justified firing former FBI Director James Comey, CNN said.
