Afghanistan: 9 killed in Jalalabad attack

Apart from nine killed a further 39 were wounded.

A gunbattle raged between Afghan security forces and a handful of militants following a series of explosions in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Sunday that killed at least six people and wounded at least 20, officials said.

Afghan Special Operations Forces arrived at the scene shortly after the blasts, and sporadic firing was ongoing as of Sunday afternoon, informed source added.

A provincial public health directorate official confirmed that the dead bodies of at least 9 people have been shifted to the hospitals along with at least 30 others who have sustained injuries.

Qaderi said at least four attackers then stormed into the building with rocket-propelled-grenade launchers and AK-47 assault rifles. Most have been in the capital Kabul, but in January, gunmen attacked an office of aid group Save the Children in Jalalabad, killing at least five people and wounding 25. Some areas of the province are a stronghold of the Islamic State group but Taliban fighters are also active there.

No one had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of filing this report.

It was the latest deadly violence to strike Afghanistan as militant groups step up attacks and US-backed Afghan forces intensify air strikes and ground offensives.
