Airstrikes kill 23 in IS-held territory in Syria

IS holds dozens of villages in eastern Syria, from the eastern banks of the Euphrates River that cuts across Deir Ezzor to the border with Iraq, and in the south of the adjacent province of Hasakeh. "Over the coming weeks, our heroic forces will liberate these areas, secure the Iraq-Syria border, and end the presence of ISIS in eastern Syria once and for all".

Syrian state media and a war monitoring group say airstrikes in Islamic State-held territory in northeastern Syria have killed at least 23 people. The group in October ousted ISIS from Raqqa, the Islamists de facto Syrian capital, but the fight for ISIS's last stronghold, the oil-rich Deir al-Zour province, foundered earlier this year when thousands of SDF fighters left to fight another foe, Turkey, which seized much of a Kurdish-dominated enclave in northern Syria.

On April 24 the U.S. President Donald trump said that the coalition "had nearly completed" the operation against the "Islamic state".

But State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the USA will "ensure that there is a strong and lasting footprint in Syria such that ISIS can not return". The U.N. and rights groups have criticized the deals, saying they amount to forced displacement.

The 42 people freed on Tuesday are the first batch of more than 80 who are to be released.

Rebels will have the option of pledging their allegiance to the government or relocating to rebel-held territory in northern Syria.
