Arsenal to appoint former PSG boss Unai Emery as new manager

Arsenal are set to appoint Unai Emery as Arsene Wenger's successor, according to reports.

Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta has withdrawn his application for the Arsenal job.

Emery left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer after winning one Ligue Un title and four domestic cups in his two seasons in charge.

Emery has previously also managed Spanish club Sevilla, who he steered to three Europa League titles.

An announcement is expected later this week.

Emery's English is not completely fluent but the language barrier is not expected to be a problem.

Despite being impressed by Arteta, senior figures among the Arsenal board began to favour Emery early last week, following initial talks with the 46-year-old, who parted ways with PSG at the end of this season.

Not only does Emery not speak fluent English, as Ornstein points out, but he's always been looked at as a manager who can't win the biggest of games - which has been a knock for Arsenal in recent years.

Gazidis felt a younger coach would slot better into a modern European football structure, complemented by head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and new head of football relations Raul Sanllehi.

It comes the day former manager Wenger waved goodbye to the club's training ground, as the speculation continued over his replacement.

"What's going on at Arsenal?"

You'd have thought that by now they would have known exactly what's going on. I can't get it out of my head. While the club hierarchy favoured the appointment of a young, emerging coach, Emery's track record at Sevilla, where he built one of Europe's most successful teams on a limited budget, persuaded Arsenal that he is the man to lead the team into a new era. If we do see a difference in intensity, drive and consistency everybody will get onside and that's all Arsenal fans want to see.
