Barcelona's unbeaten season halted by little Levante

But then Barca started to turn up the heat, with Coutinho getting his own hat-trick before Luis Suarez took the score to 5-4.

Emanuel Boetang scored a hat-trick and Enis Bardhi scored twice as Levante defeated FC Barcelona 5-4 to end the league champion's hopes of going an entire season without a defeat.

But Barcelona could not find an equaliser as they fell to a first La Liga defeat in 44 games.

It was 1932 when the last side, Real Madrid, went unbeaten in the top-flight but even that was across only 18 matches, in a 10-team division. There was a very real possibility that they could become the first team to ever go a full season unbeaten in Spain.

Before the game, Paco Jemez explained in his press conference that "It would be historic for us to beat Barcelona".

Barcelona are only two matches away from an invincible season.

He feels the chance to set a new record has helped his players retain motivation after they secured the title two weeks ago.

"Obviously we wanted to finish the league undefeated", Sergio Busquets told beIN Sport.

After a 15 game winless drought, that saw Levante pick up only six points, the club decided to make a managerial change. They move up to 15th.

Levante made the surprise start as Jose Morales delivered a low cross to Emmanuel Boateng, who made no mistake with a tap-in on nine minutes.

The lead was eventually doubled on 30 minutes as Boateng completed his brace by holding off the challenge from Nelson Semedo before rolling the ball past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Another counter just before the hour ended with another crisp Bardhi finish, as Barca were now staring at a four-goal deficit.

Bardhi's blistering shot restored the two-goal advantage before Boateng completed his hat-trick as Barca's defence was ripped apart again on the break. Luis Suarez stepped up and converted the spot-kick to bring his side to within one goal of rescuing their unbeaten run.

Rubén Rochina should have added a sixth goal for Levante in the 90th minute but he fired wide of the upright with the net gaping.
