Cam Smith To Announce Retirement Effective Immediately

Cam Smith To Announce Retirement Effective Immediately

"It's been a fairly lengthy process for me to come to this decision", Smith said.

Smith said it was the "right time" to exit the representative arena.

Smith played 56 Tests for the Kangaroos, winning two World Cups, and made a record 42 Origin appearances for the Maroons.

"I probably started having small thoughts about finishing up my representative career a year ago".

Smith, the most-capped Maroon of all time, leaves a giant void in the Maroons side at hooker; a position he's had locked down in the Queensland side since 2003.

"Last year, more than any other year, the Origin series in particular had an effect on me both physically and mentally".

"I'd like to think it will give me the opportunity to play on in our domestic competition if it is the right thing for my family and the Melbourne Storm as well".

In that period he missed just one match - the series opener in 2010 due to injury - and won a record 26 matches.

A playmaking hooker and goalkicker, Smith took over as Queensland and Australia captain in 2012 and was voted the Rugby League International Federation's player of the year.

His departure follows Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk's retirements a year ago from the representative level.

But he paid tribute to Smith, who he described as an outstanding "ambassador" and "student" in rugby league.

It doesn't guarantee my any sort of extra seasons in the NRL but I would like to think it will give me an opportunity to stay on a bit longer.

Fox Sports reports that Smith, along with Queensland coach Kevin Walters, will hold a press conference in Melbourne at 1pm this afternoon, where Smith will confirm he is walking away from Maroons and Kangaroos football effective immediately.

"I probably started having some thoughts about finishing up my representative career previous year". Brandon Smith, utility Joe Stimson and youngster Harry Grant are likely in the running to fill Smith's shoes.
