Coastal Awards rank Welsh beaches among the best in the world

Seaton Carew is one of eight beaches in the region have also received the Seaside Award, with Sandhaven Beach in South Shields, Roker and Seaburn beaches in Sunderland, and Tynemouth Longsands, King Edwards Bay, Whitley Bay, and Cullercoats, all North Tyneside, also achieving the accolade. Across the world, more than 4,000 beaches and marinas in 45 countries fly the blue flag.

In 2015, the Isle of Wight Council stopped applying for Blue Flags because cuts to the way it managed beaches here meant they would not meet the criteria.

Two West Norfolk beaches have been given awards for their cleanliness and facilities.

Allison Ogden-Newton, of Keep Britain Tidy, said: "We're committed to creating a great environment on our doorstep for everyone and to show how fantastic our beaches can be".

Whitby has been given the award, so those visiting can be sure of a clean, safe beach with great facilities and water quality.

The winners were announced by Keep Wales Tidy on a year which marks the 30th anniversary of the Blue Flag.

Sandhaven is listed among 65 beaches in the United Kingdom to receive the Blue Flag award and one of 125 to secure the Seaside Award. Clean beaches are vital to our summer-time economy, they draw huge numbers of visitors every year, supporting our local businesses and helping to maintain and create jobs for local people.

In the three decades since, this number has soared to 47, including three award-winning marinas and one boat tour operator, meaning Wales has more Blue Flags per mile than anywhere else in the UK. "Hopefully next year we'll see an even greater number joining us as we drive up standards across the board".

In total, 65 global Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards (8 more than last year) have been handed out this year.
