"Congress' Nawaz Sharif Moment": Nirmala Sitharaman On IT Cases Against P Chidambaram

The BJP on Sunday sought Rahul Gandhi's response to the income-tax authorities filing four chargesheets against former finance minister P. Chidambaram's family members, while the Congress questioned the government's inaction over corruption charges against its own people. "I am wondering if for Congress party in India, we are seeing the Nawaz Sharif moment", said Sitharaman.

Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been barred from holding public office for life by that country's Supreme Court for not disclosing assets held overseas. The Congress' attack came after the BJP leader hit out at former union minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram over his family's foreign assets.

She also talked about Nawaz Sharif's latest revelations where he admitted that militant organisations are active in Pakistan and his country could have averted the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

In another tweet, Shah said, "This explains why despite Supreme Court's orders Sonia Gandhi, former PM Dr Manmohan Singh & then FM P Chidambaram dragged their feet on formation of SIT, one of the first decisions taken by Modi govt, to fight Black Money!" In a tongue-in-cheek remark, Chidambaram reminded Shah of BJP's promise of returning billions of dollars stashed overseas and giving Rs 15 lakh to every Indian.

"Bring the money back (from foreign undeclared bank accounts) and put Rs 1.5 million in the account of every Indian, as promised", Chidambaram said in another tweet.

The income tax department on May 11 filed cases against Chidambaram's wife Nalini, son Karti, daughterin-law Srinidhi and a firm under the Black Money Act for allegedly not disclosing their foreign assets. BJP president Amit Shah and Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman were among the leaders who hit out at Chidambaram.

Ms Sitharman said, for sometime now, Income Tax authorities have been taking action against the senior Congress leader. "How could they indict their own selves?" "We want to know if Rahul Gandhi would investigate this as he has been highlighting corruption charges against BJP leaders".

Chidambaram took to Twitter to rubbish charges against him and said the BJP is "dreaming of billions". Soon after coming to power Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made regulations in this direction, wherein, it was declared those who have black money and undeclared property can do so before September 2015.

To a question on charges against Chidambaram's family, Khera said the statement given by Chidambaram's chartered accountant is clear that there was no wrongdoing and that the income tax department's action would be challenged in the court of law. Previous week, Madras High Court rejected the petition of the Chidambaram's family members, directing Income Tax to proceed under Black Money Act, which envisages 120 percent fine and 10 years of imprisonment.
