Countries that continue to deal with Iran could face United States sanctions: Bolton

European countries and companies that continue to do business with Iran could face US sanctions, national security adviser John Bolton said Sunday.

Washington's withdrawal from the Iran deal has upset European allies, cast uncertainty over global oil supplies and raised the risk of conflict in the Middle East.

Bord Bia and Enterprise Ireland led separate trade missions to Tehran in 2016, which were attended by dozens of Irish companies, looking to open trade contacts between the two states.

New Zealand exported $120 million of goods to Iran previous year, with dairy products making up three-quarters of that.

With 80 million people cut off from worldwide trade for years, Iran is seen as one of the great untapped markets.

Bolton, asked whether the United States might impose sanctions on European companies that continue to do business with Iran, told CNN: "It's possible".

Where does New Zealand stand?

Israel and Iran engaged in an extensive military exchange on the heels of Trump's decision to leave the deal.

He then said pre-existing USA sanctions on Iran would be reinstated, telling reporters: "Powerful sanctions will go into full effect".

Trump's announcement last Tuesday that the U.S. was exiting the 2015 nuclear accord was met with widespread dismay among its other signatories - China, Russia, France, the Britain and Germany.

"If the nuclear deal is to continue, the interests of the people of Iran must be assured", Zarif added.

While he has committed to remaining in the nuclear agreement, French President Emmanuel Macron floated the idea of a supplemental deal on Iran during a recent visit to Washington. "Europeans are going to face the effective U.S. sanctions, already are really, because much of what they would like to sell to Iran involves USA technology, for which the licenses will not be available".

Bolton said Europe was still digesting Trump's May 8 move. "I think that will sink in; we'll see what happens then", Bolton said.

Germany said it would spend the next few months trying to persuade Washington to change its mind.

Germany's minister for economic affairs, Peter Altmaier, said on Sunday that Berlin would try to "persuade the United States government to change its behavior".

In an interview with ZDF public television, Altmaier noted the United States has set a 90-day deadline for foreign firms to comply with the return of sanctions and that this period can be used to convince Washington to change course.

In Beijing on Sunday, Zarif said he was hopeful of forging a "clear future design" for the deal to save it from collapse, after US President Donald Trump withdrew from it on Tuesday.

We all share the common objective of making sure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, are anxious about their terribly destabilising and threatening military behaviour across the region and their ballistic missile program.
