Dame Tessa Jowell's Final Parliamentary Speech In The House Of Lords

Dame Tessa Jowell's Final Parliamentary Speech In The House Of Lords

"She brought the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics to London, and ensured their success".

Sarah Lindsell, CEO of the Brain Tumour Charity, said the charity had started working with "wonderful ambassador" Dame Tessa towards the end of past year, and she praised her campaigning for cancer patients.

Around 10,700 athletes took part in the London Olympics in 2012, with 79 countries and regions acquiring at least one medal: gold, silver or bronze.

"She was universally popular and respected among politicians of all parties", he added. She already had a reputation of a radical champion of people with mental illness and the elderly, and had a deep understanding of the challenges young mothers faced.

Tessa Jowell once said she'd "jump under a bus" for Tony Blair.

She convinced many unsure colleagues about the merits of bidding for the 2012 Olympics.

Having pushed the British government to bid for the Olympics, her joy on securing the games was short-lived. "Her focus on her children and stepchildren was the impetus for her putting parenting support at the heart of Sure Start children's centres".

Her last few months saw her campaign for more cancer treatments to be made available through the NHS. "Her husband David and their children Jessie and Matthew were by her side, with Jessie's husband Finn, Matthew's wife Ella, and David's children from his first marriage". "They have been touched and moved by the response, in both Houses of Parliament; from members of the public; and other cancer patients and their families around the world".

A small private funeral is due to be held "in the coming days", according to the family statement. She understood they would be great for the United Kingdom, persuading a sceptical Tony Blair and others that it would be winnable, and helped build key alliances with local authorities, the sports establishment and media.

Matt's extraordinary Mum passed away last night. Answering that debate on behalf of the our benches as Shadow Health Minister was one of the most hard speeches I have made - mainly because I didn't want to let Tessa down by weeping, when she was showing such bravery.

"Her networking skills, which I used to tease her about as she was always on the phone, were used to enormous effect for good, in promoting worldwide collaboration and sharing research and best practice in the treatment of brain tumours and, with her family, turning personal tragedy into the possibility of hope for those facing a similar challenge in the future". Tessa was the warmest and kindest soul, she welcomed me so generously into their family, and no matter what she has achieved in her life - and she achieved an extraordinary amount, I know her family are the thing that made her most proud. The bravery you showed this past year was like nothing I have ever seen and I will be inspired by it every day of my life.

She stood to be Labour's candidate for mayor of London in 2016 but lost out to Sadiq Khan.

Four-time gold medal winning rower Sir Matthew Pinsent also paid tribute to Dame Tessa's determination to bring the Olympic Games to London.

He added: "And even after she was diagnosed with cancer, she typically used it as an opportunity to campaign for improved research and treatment to help other sufferers".
