Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian to get his own Star Wars spin-off movie

Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian to get his own Star Wars spin-off movie

Reportedly, studio chief Kathleen Kennedy has mentioned what a lot of people have been asking for since about the time the first trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story were released. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and risky criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga's most unlikely heroes.

The reveal came when Kathleen Kennedy spoke to Premiere France. The smooth-talking, cape-wearing smuggler effortlessly steals every scene he's in, which is why the studio has made a decision to gift us all with a Lando spinoff movie. Although, it's so early that it's hard to be sure of any of that. However, a film focused on Lando Calrissian seems like a misplaced priority. We know Lucasfilm was working on a Boba Fett movie at one point, and rumors of that project have never entirely gone away.

Don't let the title of Solo: A Star Wars Story fool you - the film unquestionably belongs to Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian. We'll all get to find out for ourselves next week... It's an especially strong vote of support considering that the general audience hasn't even seen the performance yet.

Premiere editors have since also issued a clarification online, explaining there was a "misunderstanding between our journalist and Kathleen Kennedy", as a Calrissian movie won't be happening anytime soon.

We are intrigued by the thoughts of a Lando spinoff, but also interested to see where his backstory leads.

While we likely won't see Glover in all his caped glory until 2020 or later, you can always travel back 40 years ago to Billy Dee Williams's original take on the character in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. So, that may be next.
