Du Plessis powers Chennai into seventh IPL final

Du Plessis powers Chennai into seventh IPL final

On Tuesday, Sunrisers will once again hope that their bowling will do the trick against an in-form Chennai top order comprising the likes of Ambati Rayudu, who has been their standout performer with 586 runs and had in fact taken the game away with a scintillating hundred when the two teams last met.

Chennai Super Kings were apparently finished the moment Rashid Khan bamboozled MS Dhoni with a sensational googly.

Bravo then took an exceptional caught-and-bowled chance, whilst tumbling forward during his follow through to get rid of the unsafe Yusuf Pathan and leave Kane Williamson's side in danger of failing to bat out their overs. He was up against a tailender in Shardul Thakur, and few would have fancied him to concede 17 runs off that over.

However, Hyderabad bowlers do deserve credit for making a match of a small total but this time their luck ran out in the end.

Du Plessis hit five fours and four sixes to propel Chennai, who returned this season after a two-year corruption ban along with Rajasthan Royals, into the final.

It was not a good outing for Bangladesh's ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan as he scored just 12 in Sunrisers' innings and was then taken for 20 off his two overs during Chennai's chase.

Chasing a modest target of 140, CSK were down in the dumps at 92 for 7 before du Plessis (67 off 42 balls) engineered a stunning comeback and fittingly finished the match with a straight six off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) bowled well and backed up well by Rashid (Khan).

Brief scores: SunRisers Hyderabad 139/7 in 20 ovs (Brathwaite 43 n.o; Bravo 2/25) lost to Chennai Super Kings 140/8 in 19.1 ovs (Du Plessis 67 n.o; Rashid 2/11).

CSK may have pulled off heist after heist in this tournament - and in the years past - but what were the odds of them getting 43 off 18 balls, against the best bowling line-up of this IPL? We will get hit some times, but we have to try and balance it out.

Team wise, CSK brought in Shane Watson for Sam Billings while SRH, coming into the game with three losses on the trot, went in unchanged. Bravo came on to bowl the seventh over - the earliest Dhoni has introduced him this season - and bowled out by the 17th, finishing with 4-0-25-2. As they say, there's always one surplus player in Dhoni's T20 teams, depending on where and whom they play. This is the best bowling combination we have got. "It is important that we learn from this experience", he added. Faf's experience showed. He's had no continuity, but he's come good.

"A trip to Kolkata now", Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson said.

"Nonetheless, it's good to win a game like this, but what's more important, is knowing how we can improve".

Why bowl Brathwaite at the death?

"We kept losing wickets, so we had to push ourselves".

"The game did swing our way, and bowlers were outstanding, but we didn't quite execute it like in the past", Williamson said.

Of all the lessons teams can take from CSK, this is most vital: to create an environment where every player grabs his chance, where batsmen warm the bench for weeks and produce a match-winning knock on demand.
