FBI, DOJ to brief lawmakers on handling of Russian Federation probe on Thursday

The US Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation will provide a highly anticipated briefing on the handling of the Russian Federation investigation to Republican members of Congress on Thursday, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Sputnik. The individuals that are expected to attend are Chairman [Devin] Nunes, Chairman [Trey] Gowdy, FBI Director [Christopher] Wray, DNI [Director of National Intelligence] Director [Dan] Coats, and DOJ official Ed O'Callaghan.

House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes and House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, both Republicans, are expected to attend, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a regular news briefing.

"I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!"

The pretext Trump seized on is the revelation that a longtime FBI and Central Intelligence Agency informant, described as a retired college professor, made contact with three Trump campaign associates before the election as part of the FBI's initial investigation into Russian meddling.

"It's clear that they're only taking the position of the FBI on this and the Democratic Party... which is that Trump is trying to block the investigation into his alleged collusion with Russia", Lauria told show hosts Brian Becker and John Kiriakou.

Sanders said Democrats weren't included in the meeting because they hadn't requested the records themselves, and suggested reporters ask them why they should be "randomly invited".

While some conservative Republican lawmakers have been critical of the deputy AG and the Russian Federation investigation, many GOP members have advised the president to leave Rosenstein in his post and allow the Russian Federation probe to run its natural course.

Sanders did not say what documents they would be viewing. The record suggests that Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were so uncomfortable investigating a presidential campaign in the weeks and months before an election that they tiptoed around promising lines of inquiry rather than appear to be taking a side. The FBI director at the time was James Comey, and while we heard plenty about Clinton's emails before the vote, we had no idea that such a mature investigation of the Trump campaign was underway. And last month, the president tweeted about "the Fake & Corrupt Russia Investigation", writing, "Mueller is most conflicted of all (except Rosenstein)".

For Trump's supporters in the House, that is not good enough.

At least 19 House Republicans critical of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation signed on to the new 12-page resolution on Tuesday calling on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint a special counsel to investigate "misconduct at the highest levels" of the DOJ and FBI, Rep. And I'm looking for clearance from my attorney to reveal this to the public.

President Donald Trump declined to say Tuesday whether he has confidence in Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, escalating pressure on the Justice Department as his White House negotiated rare access to classified documents for his congressional allies.

Justice Department "regulations protect this type of information from disclosure to Congress for legitimate investigative and privacy reasons", Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a letter to Rosenstein on Monday. The president was calling for an investigation into both political opponents from the former administration and career law enforcement agents, without evidence of wrongdoing, for the obvious goal of undermining a criminal probe into his own conduct and that of his associates.
