First post-Mugabe election called in Zimbabwe

FORMER British Minister of Africa and Labour Party politician, Lord Peter Hain has applauded President Emmerson Mnangagwa for tirelessly working in opening up Zimbabwe to the world politically and business wise.

Addressing a Zanu PF healing and reconciliation workshop in Harare, Mnangagwa said he had gathered from State security agents that the alleged plot involved party members sympathetic to former President Robert Mugabe.

The general elections referred to as "harmonised election" will allow voters to choose a president, members of the National Assembly and Councillors.

His main opponent will be Nelson Chamisa, 40, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, which lost its stalwart, Morgan Tsvangirai, to cancer earlier this year.

Prospective candidates will be registered on June 14. He said in case the presidential election did not produce a victor, a run-off would be held on September 8, 2018.

Absent from the long list of candidates vying for power for the first time since the country's independence 38 years ago is Mr Mugabe, 94, whose rule came to an end in a military takeover last November.

According to New Zimbabwe.com, MDC spokesperson Thabita khumalo said the party had been forced into a corner by Mnangagwa's "intransigence and goal shifting" over electoral reforms for the July 30 vote.

Mnangagwa has invited the Commonwealth to monitor voting in Zimbabwe for the first time since 2002 when Harare was suspended from the group over accusations of rigged elections.

Nicknamed "Crocodile" for his secretive and insular demeanor before taking office, Mnangagwa goes into the election with the advantage of incumbency.

Mnangagwa has denied the charges and says political freedoms have improved under his short tenure and that he is repairing frosty relations with the West.
