He said Iran was continuing negotiations with the European Union on issues related to the nuclear agreement, implicitly denying that the three countries discussed with Iran its regional threats and the development of ballistic missiles. "These will be the strongest sanctions in history by the time we are complete".

"Anytime sanctions are put in place, countries have to give up economic activity", Pompeo said, adding that US companies have sacrificed business opportunities.

Pompeo issued Monday a lengthy list of demands the U.S.is seeking to include in a new nuclear deal with Iran after President Donald Trump exited Washington from the landmark accord brokered by his predecessor and world powers.

He repeatedly called Iran the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism, saying it antagonizes neighbors, represses its own people and imperils peace worldwide.

"Iran will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East", Pompeo said Monday, outlining 12 tough conditions from Washington for any "new deal" with Tehran. Pompeo said that the long list of demands was Iran's fault, and that crippling sanctions would bring them back to the negotiating table. The comments came as Washington tries to increase pressure on Tehran after President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the worldwide nuclear deal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Monday that the United States' foreign policy is "imprisoned by delusions and failed policies".

Iran poured scorn on threatened US sanctions on Tuesday and told European powers to step up and salvage its worldwide nuclear deal - though Germany signalled there was only so much it could do to fend off Washington's economic clout. Other nations have agreed that Iran has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes. He insisted Iran give nuclear inspectors unfettered access to the country and stop funding rebels in Yemen.

Soon after the speech, a member of the Iranian parliament's national security committee called Pompeo's strategy nothing more than "U.S. dreams" and suggested the best thing to do was to wait for a change in position after Trump leaves office, whenever that may be.

"The essence of radicalism passes by fast", Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh told the Iranian Students News Agency.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday he will travel to Washington to meet with Pompeo to discuss Washington's stance on the worldwide nuclear deal with Iran. "The great people of Iran support him", Kowsari said. "But not its actions which jeopardize the world's citizens". The 2015 deal concluded under the Obama administration dealt only with the nuclear programme and was not a treaty but rather a UN-endorsed executive agreement between the parties. "If they choose their commercial interest is to trade with USA and not to seek new contract with Iran, that's for them".

"The challenge is converting that pressure into policy outcomes, and that takes diplomacy", said Michael Singh, managing director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a former senior director for Middle East affairs under President George W. Bush.

As for the consequences, Pompeo was vague, saying only that Iran would be met with "steely resolve" if it continues on its current course.

US President Donald Trump's newly installed top diplomat also hinted at the possibility of military action should Iranian leaders reconstitute their nuclear program.

He also demanded Iran end support for other militant groups, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Meanwhile, the conservative Kayhan newspaper, which usually voices the political attitudes of Iran's hardliners, said in its May 14 edition that Rouhani had made numerous strategic mistakes in his decision to enter negotiations with the West. "That is their decision to make", Pompeo said.
