That lead is still held by Simon Yates. That was a really tough finish.

"I'm getting there, day by day", he explained. He (Dumoulin) was chasing me all the way in the final there, it was an extremely hard final. I already have a good gap to Froome.

"I need as many seconds as I can get so maybe I need to go for more bonus seconds", he added.

Froome now lies outside the top 10, with the Team Sky rider now over three minutes off the lead. I am super happy and I would like to have a few easy days now before we get to the mountains. "I'm going to keep fighting".

"I certainly haven't given up hope", insisted Froome.

The stage crossed through the hometown of Italian cyclist Michele Scarponi who was killed in a road accident a year ago. They were swiftly joined by Fausto Masnada.

Thursday's 12th stage is a flat, 214-kilometer route from Osimo to the motorsport race circuit of Imola.

Bahrain-Merida rider Matej Mohoric has won Stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia, holding off AG2R La Mondiale's Nico Denz at the end of what, at 244 kilometres, is the longest stage of this year's race.
