Gunfight rages in J&K's Pulwama; one CRPF personnel dead

In Jammu & Kashmir, a CRPF jawan was martyred in an encounter between security forces and terrorists in Pulwama district in the wee hours today. Police said no one was injured in the attack and they had identified the house from where the shots were fired.

Zulfiqar Hassan told The Telegraph that Mandeep was conducting room intervention, during which security forces flush out militants from room after room, when he was hit by a bullet. However, the terrorists managed to escape taking advantage of darkness amid intense stone pelting in the area.

When contacted, SSP Pulwama Mohammad Aslam Choudhary confirmed killing the killing of CRPF trooper and as well as militants' escaping after the gunfight.

Security forces launched cordon and search operation in Pulwama following information about presence of militants.

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 166 per cent more civilian fatalities due to militancy while there was a 42 per cent rise in the number of terrorists neutralised in 2017 compared to the previous year, the Home Ministry said in April. Meanwhile, police sources said that a civilian was also injured in the encounter. The militants fired at a guard post in Wadwan village, injuring constable Shamim Ahmad.

"He fell down and the three militants snatched his rifle", Hassan said. The encounter comes less than a week after the security forces gunned down five Hizbul Mujahideen militants at Badigam village in Shopian.
