Hidden pages uncovered in Anne Frank's diary contain dirty jokes

Researchers have published for the first time writing on two pages of Anne Frank's diary which she covered over with brown paper, discovering dirty jokes and a teenager's interest in sex.

Now, officials from the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam haveannounced the discovery of two previously unknown pages of her diary-material that reveals an earthier side of its teenage author.

"I sometimes imagine that someone might come to me and ask me to inform him about sexual matters", Frank wrote.

"Anyone who reads the passages that have now been discovered will be unable to suppress a smile", said Frank van Vree, director of the Netherlands Institute for War Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

The hidden pages had been covered with gummed brown paper - apparently to hide her risqué writing from her family.

The entries were written on 28 September 1942, not long after the 13-year-old Anne went into hiding.

She kept a diary throughout her time in hiding, and after her death, her father, Otto, published it in 1947.

The Anne Frank House said the museum would make the pages available on its website, but only in Dutch due to copyright restrictions.

The pages were backlit by a flash, and image-processing software helped researchers make out the words, reported The Associated Press. In her diary, she wrote about other jokes that were sexual in nature, discussed her changing body and menstruation, and explored her own budding sexual feelings toward members of the same and opposite sex. On prostitution, Frank noted that "in Paris they have big houses for that". The Anne Frank House did not release the text itself along with the announcement.

"She starts with an imaginary person whom she is telling about sex, so she creates a kind of literary environment to write about a subject she's maybe not comfortable with", he said.

The Lynn Classical High School Drama Club will perform "The Diary of Anne Frank" on Friday, May 18 and Saturday the 19th at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5.

One of the jokes reads as follows: "Do you know why the German Wehrmacht girls are in the Netherlands?"

When Anne Frank was arrested in the "secret annex" she and her family had hidden in between 1942 and 1944, she had to leave her beloved diary behind. She might have hidden these two original pages because she anxious that the other seven people in the annex would read her diary. After two years, they were discovered and sent to Nazi concentration camps, where Anne died of typhoid in 1945.
