Israel launches new air raid in Gaza

Israel has faced global criticism over its use of live fire.

While some members said the U.N.'s most powerful body needed to speak as one to try to calm the volatile situation - and the Palestinian envoy implored, "When are you going to act?" - a proposed statement had stalled Monday after the us blocked it.

Palestinian authorities released "martyrdom" photos of 10 members of the Hamas terrorist group's internal security apparatus, according to BILD reporter Bjorn Stritzel. In response, Israel has summoned a top Turkish diplomat to be reprimanded.

For Israel, it was enough to cement its narrative.

President of Guatemala Jimmy Morales (L) and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) give a joint press conference after signing bilateral agreements at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem on November 29, 2016.

Israel defended its actions and accused Hamas of using protests to hide attacks, justifying its use of lethal force.

Tens of thousands have protested along Gaza's border with Israel since March 30 calling for Palestinian refugees to be able to return to their homes now inside Israel. They have steadily expanded Jewish settlements in the West Bank, on land Palestinians expected to be part of any Palestinian state.

The admission came one day after Björn Stritzel, a reporter for the German tabloid BILD, tweeted so-called "martyrdom pictures" of Hamas militants killed in the violence.

The weekly protests peaked on Monday when about 40,000 Gaza residents descended on the border area. Others used wire-cutters to try to breach the border fence.

On Monday, Abbas slammed the new USA embassy in Jerusalem as a "settlement outpost" and vowed that the Palestinians will not take parts in peace talks brokered by the Americans "in any way, shape or form". Hardly a mention was made of the border violence, only about an hour's drive away.

In two separate incidents, IDF troops opened fire on gunmen who were trying to shoot them, Hadashot TV news said. Israeli military spokesman Lt Col Jonathan Conricus said Hamas had "set the record straight", adding: 'This was no peaceful protest'.

Weeks of protests and clashes along the border may be reaching an end as Ramadan begins, but the death toll has led to worldwide condemnations of Israel and calls for an independent investigation. "We're at 25 times our capacity and our drug inventory is exhausted", he said.

Hamas' statement comes at a moment when Israel finds itself largely isolated over its response to the protests.

"In South Africa, we see this as a signal to express our solidarity with the Palestinian people". The Palestinians held a one-day general strike and called for three days of mourning for the victims.

Guatemala festively opened its new embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday, becoming the second country to do so after the United States, and giving Israel a diplomatic boost as it faces worldwide criticism for the deadly violence on the Gaza border.

More moves came Wednesday with the Palestinian Authority calling back ambassadors in Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria - all European Union members that have expressed an interest in opening embassies in Jerusalem. Paraguay said it also will move its embassy to Jerusalem.
