Lewis Hamilton: I didn't deserve to win Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton claimed a fortunate first victory of the season at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, inheriting the race lead after Valtteri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel's races imploded in the last 10 laps. Shortly after Bottas pulled to the side Sergio Perez took advantage of Vettel's woes passing the Ferrari to grab the third spot.

"The vehicle felt really good and we were fast". Soon afterward, Bottas' right-rear tire picked up a puncture, ending his race and elevating Hamilton to first.

"Our auto was really good this afternoon", Vettel said.

But it was a bittersweet result for Hamilton, who admitted that he probably didn't deserve the win. This is the fifth best track to overtake and I am going to try to give Sebastian a hard time tomorrow (Sunday).

Despite taking the standings lead for the first time this season, Hamilton said the win didn't mark a turning point in the fight with Vettel and Ferrari.

"We allow them to race and allow them to go wheel to wheel".

"This forced him to stop on lap 22 and take the Soft compound to the finish". Instead, Bottas is fourth - eight points behind Kimi Raikkonen and 30 behind teammate and new championship leader Hamilton. It was his and Force India's first podium since 2016.

Allison said: "After three races where we had opportunities to win that we did not take, it's great to have victory come our way this afternoon in Baku". The British driver and his team have been ousted for the moment from the comfort zone they have enjoyed in winning the last four world championships. "It just didn't work".

THERE were flashes of Turkey 2010 as Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen crashed out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in spectacular fashion.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was fourth after barely scraping into the top-10 shootout.

"They are both in the doghouse". Stewards later reprimanded both drivers. Bottas led ahead of Hamilton, Raikkonen and Vettel.

Romain Grosjean then suffered one of the more embarrassing crashes in recent history after hitting the wall despite driving at reduced speed with the safety vehicle on track.

Vettel was demoted to second and, in attempting a gung-ho move to retake the lead, fell off the track and ended down in fourth.

Red Bull's Adrian Newey was seen walking away from the garage in disgust and Christian Horner was so livid when reporters tried speaking to him as he made his way to the drivers. "S*** happens, but without a safety vehicle it would have been a different race". The Russian has been given a three-place grid penalty for the next event in Spain.

It was fitting that the race that started with a bit of collision and mayhem at the beginning with Raikkonen and Force India-Mercedes' Esteban Ocon colliding (among others) ended on a similarly unpredictable note. He won the race ahead of Raikkonen and Perez, who passed Vettel.

Charles Leclerc finished sixth for the Sauber team to pick up his first ever F1 points.
