Lightning strikes leave 1000 Midlands homes without power as thunderstorms roll in

Lightning strikes leave 1000 Midlands homes without power as thunderstorms roll in

"A number of flights have regrettably been cancelled at Stansted Airport this morning due to an earlier airport fuelling system failure, caused by a lightning strike", a spokesman said.

An early summer thunderstorm rolled into the United Kingdom overnight, with meteorologists saying the United Kingdom was hit by between 15,000 and 20,000 lightning strikes.

Met Office meteorologist Charlie Powell said there were somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 strikes overnight.

But the news comes as parts of the United Kingdom remain underwater following dramatic thunderstorms and torrential rain.

The thunderstorms came after a "pretty hot and humid" May night, Sky News reported. Videos and photos showed lightning flashing in the sky.

The lightning strikes illuminated the sky at night and were followed with heavy rain.

More than 60,000 lightning strikes were recorded in Britain between Saturday and Sunday.

BBC weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker tweeted: "Mother of all #thunderstorms now over London". I've never seen a storm with such frequent lightning in my life I don't think.

Forecaster Gemma Plumb, from BBC Weather, said that as the storms pushed northwards across England on Sunday, more would be coming up over the English Channel from the continent. "Mostly flashes and not too loud, but flash simply stunning". Any flooding on roads in your area?

Parts of Wales and central and southern England could see further thunderstorms on both Sunday and bank holiday Monday, with the Met Office warning of the possibility of power cuts and delays to trains and buses.
