Mahathir and Anwar (a jailed reformist) won the general election last week.

In 2008, once his ban on political participation was lifted, he was hit with further sodomy charges.

Anwar Ibrahim is expected to take part in a gathering Wednesday night at Padang Timur, Petaling Jaya.

When Mahathir was prime minister in the 1990s, Anwar was his deputy and clear heir-apparent. Anwar was sacked and charged with corruption and sodomy, charges seen as politically motivated.

Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying in the report that his government would follow due process and Najib would be treated fairly.

Mahathir added that Anwar, after his release, would need to seek a seat in parliament and then might be given a cabinet post, but would play the same role in the coalition as leaders of the other three parties in the alliance.

It was a shared desire to remove scandal-ridden former-PM Najib Razak that forged the unlikely alliance between Anwar and Dr Mahathir, who came out of retirement to bring down his former protege.

"This matter is up for discussion, but Anwar has never demanded to be prime minister immediately", she was quoted as telling reporters at a rehabilitation hospital where her husband is recuperating from a shoulder surgery.

Mahathir, 92 was sworn in as the leader on Thursday, making him the world's oldest democratically elected leader.

Also Monday, the graft agency's former investigations and intelligence chief lodged complaints alleging that Najib had used his position to block corruption investigations into the 1MDB fund and several other cases.

Tensions within the ruling coalition, which are likely given differences between Mr Mahathir and Mr Anwar in the past, would raise doubts about the ability of the administration to deliver.

Mahathir had said he would stand aside for Anwar and told a Wall Street Journal conference on Tuesday via video that he would remain in office for now.

Mahathir, who was Malaysia's prime minister from 1981 to 2003, led his four-party alliance to victory against Barisan Nasional in last week's general election, ousting a coalition that had ruled the Southeast Asian nation for six decades.

"Seeing him walk free makes me emotional, but the fight is not over", said Ridzuan Ismail, an Anwar supporter at the hospital.

The lawsuits name Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, and Mr Najib's stepson Riza Aziz among the alleged beneficiaries of misappropriated funds. Mr Najib and his wife were barred on Saturday from leaving the country as a leaked flight plan revealed they were planning to leave for Indonesia.

Without a deal to help recover the funds, Najib faces the likelihood of prosecution and possible criminal charges.

A person described in the U.S. lawsuits as "Malaysian Official 1" was said to have received more than US$1 billion in 1MDB funds, some of which was used to buy jewellery for the person's wife.
