Margot Kidder, Lois Lane In 'Superman,' Dies At 69; Celebrities Pay Tribute

While most will remember Margot Kidder for her most iconic role, Lois Lane, from 1978's Superman, her acting career began in the late 1960s. In the 1990s she was suffering from mental health issues that ultimately left her homeless.

Kidder was acting up until her death and reportedly has two projects yet to be released.

In this way, she turned that dark chapter into something positive.

Kidder also starred in The Amityville Horror as Kathy Lutz in 1979. She stood up for people.

She maintained a close friendship with her Superman co-star Christopher Reeve, which lasted from 1978 until his death in 2004.

Sad news for lovers of superhero cinema, as it has been announced that Margot Kidder, star of the original Superman, has died. She was diagnosed with manic depression in 1988, but refused to take her prescribed medication, which led to her getting taken away in handcuffs by police after an altercation in 1996. She lived on the street for days, until police found her and took her to a psychiatric hospital.

It is not yet known what Kidder died from. The actress made her debut in a short film The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar in 1968, which was a drama set in a Canadian logging community. She had been writing a book when a computer virus caused her to lose all her files; the news that her years of work couldn't be salvaged triggered what she would soon discover was a manic episode with paranoia.

The actress passed away in her Montana home. The magazine described reports about her "addictions and recoveries, husbands and divorces" and "a stable of boyfriends", including "Superman III" costar Richard Pryor, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and directors Steven Spielberg and Brian De Palma. She also appears alongside Christopher Reeve in one of the most famous scenes in cinema history. It wasn't until she was forced into therapy that she was able to get a handle on her health. Cocky, self-assured, and proud of her chain-smoking habit (and inability to spellcheck), she breathed some screwball humor into the film as well as an air of authentic newsroom brassiness. Even from a young age, she had ambitions of stardom.

Margot Kidder continued to work in TV and film through her struggles and won a daytime Emmy in 2015 for outstanding performance in a children's or pre-school series for "R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour". Kidder told The Guardian in 2005 about playing the character. She became active in US politics and campaigned for Barack Obama in the 2008 election.
