Mercedes restore order at top with Hamilton's win

Speaking after his deserved victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, Hamilton told The Times: "I said I wanted to come and win in the way that I won, I was just glad I did it as planned".

After doing back to back tests in Barcelona on Tuesday, Sebastian Vettel says Pirelli was right to bring thinner tread tyres to the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend.

Pirelli brought in thinner tyres for the GP as they were anxious the heat in Barcelona could cause problems with the thicker variant teams had been using.

Testing in northeastern Spain concludes on Wednesday.

"Honestly I think Monaco is going to be hard for us", he said after Sunday's race.

"I was not translated correctly", Wolff said referring to him dismissing Ricciardo's chances of driving for Mercedes, as quoted on Planet F1.

"I'm looking forward to Monaco".

Kevin Magnussen was fourth fastest in the Haas but stopped on track in the afternoon after his engineers spotted a problem in the car's data.

Force India's Nikita Mazepin earned fifth overall and set his best time on softs with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Asked by Autosport whether he felt vindicated by the outcome of Vettel's back-to-back testing of the tyres, Pirelli Formula 1 chief Mario Isola said: "Absolutely".

Hamilton was never challenged on the way to his 41st win from pole position, surpassing a record he shared with seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Behind him, neither Sauber's Charles Leclerc nor Williams driver Robert Kubica improved in the afternoon, ending the day separated by 0.260s using hypersofts in seventh and eighth respectively. It was expected to be done before the start of the current campaign, but it has dragged on with the season now five races old.

"The conclusions are that there will be a lot of things to watch, to analyse and double check", Kubica said.

Isola also explained that giving all teams the opportunity to try out the different specifications in the test - something that was planned in advance of the weekend - was so that Pirelli could get a "proper comparison". However, I do think that by changing the width of the track on the entry to some of the corners, and tweaking the layout a bit, we could create some decent passing places by creating some new lines.

Many teams used junior drivers, defined as a driver who has completed two or fewer races, as required by F1 regulations for in-season testing. Secondly, we struggled with the tyres.

"The 1-2 we got today was definitely down to the decisions the team made during the race", he suggested.
