Motorola files patent for foldable smartphone that transforms into a tablet

Other companies have been heard to also join the bandwagon like Lenovo with those flexible displays and devices, ZTE with the Axon Multy dual-screen phone, LG, Google, OPPO, and just recently, Huawei. As for Lenovo, there was that foldable folio tablet prototype shown off in a video past year. Sadly, the feature didn't really take off with the users, so it was offered with a lot of devices.

When it comes to the design, the patent reveals that there's a hinge in the middle of the smartphone or the tablet device which doesn't appear like an elegant solution. What is notable is that Lenovo, Motorola's parent company, was the first company in the world to start working on foldable device prototypes. In this sense, the patents that are emerging about the Surface Phone, from its foldable Courier-like concept before to its hinge-mounted third display today, are encouraging. Additionally, Motorola's upcoming foldable smartphone will house the main camera at the top left and the speaker will be positioned on the top right.

The sketches show other form factors as well, including tent mode, an entirely-closed book-like mode and also a carry case that we aren't sure is even a case. In fact, it looks somewhat similar to ZTE's Axon M foldable phone that flaunts dual screens.

It is worth noting that designing a truly foldable smartphone is certainly a tremendous task. This will be removable and will have an opening for the camera. At present, when most smartphones have focused on giving large displays, increasing the screen size would make the device larger, while the foldable option tackles this problem by giving a larger screen at a compact size. "So hopefully what you just described [the Motorola Razr brand] will be developed or realized very soon".

Samsung's foldable phone aka Galaxy X has been in news since like forever and a recent report now states that we will have to wait another one year for the phone to come. Stay tuned for future updates regarding this device.
