Officer, 3 attackers dead in Indonesia police station assault

Police remove the bodies of attackers who were shot and killed at the entrance of a police station in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, Wednesday in this photo taken by Antara Foto. Another man was arrested and four others were suspected to have fled the scene, it said.

Local police initially said they had killed three people and wounded another.

The latest attack happens after a series of incidents in East Java - Surabaya Police headquarters bombing on Monday, three Surabaya church bombings on Sunday morning and an accidentally blast inside a low-priced apartment in Sidoarjo on Sunday night.

No group has yet taken responsibility for Wednesday's attack.

The coordinated church attack was a sign local extremist groups were becoming more proficient, and stirs concerns about an uptick in extremism as hundreds of Indonesians who flocked to fight alongside Islamic State in the Middle East return home. A suicide bombing was also reported at the city's police headquarters on Monday when bike-borne attackers blew themselves up at the checkpoint to the precinct. Media were at the station to cover a press conference about a drug bust when the attack happened.

"We are now checking the minivan and the body of the assailants", said Riau Police spokesman Adj. Sr.

The string of attacks comes as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, welcomes the first day of Ramadan.

Last year, a suicide bombing at a bus station in Jakarta killed three police officers. At least 26 people died in a series of terror attacks in Surabaya on Sunday and Monday, including 13 militants and their children.
