PM Modi to commence a visit to Russian Federation on May 21

Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold talks on May 21 in Sochi with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will pay a working visit to Russia, the Kremlin press service said on Monday. Russian Federation is the only country - apart from Japan - which has an "annual summit" mechanism with India. The statement put out by Putin's office says that Modi "will be in Russian Federation on a working visit". The summit, according to sources, was a last minute decision and only came together after an unnanounced visit to Moscow by NSA Ajit Doval and foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale.

An External Affairs Ministry release on Monday said Modi's visit to Russian Federation will be an important occasion for him and Putin to exchange views on global matters in a broad and long-term perspective in order to further strengthen the special and privileged strategic partnership.

The Modi-Putin summit is surprising in another respect - Modi will be meeting Putin at the SCO summit in Qingdao in early June, and Putin is expected to visit India for the annual India-Russia summit also in the next few months.

The meeting between the two world leaders comes as a surprise as both Modi and Putin are set to meet quite a few times this year. The talking points included the Afghan and West Asian situation. All major powers, including the UK, France, Germany, Russia and China, have said that they will fulfill the commitments under the deal, known as JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action).

India is understood to have conveyed to Moscow its strong support given the current geopolitical situation.

He further said that both the leaders will also discuss their respective national developmental priorities and bilateral matters. "All this allows us to closely interact and coordinate our approaches in the United Nations and various military and political security mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific region", Lavrov had said.
