Rise in kids mental health referrals

Overall the number of referrals to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) from schools in London and the south east has increased from 10,127 in 2014/15, reaching 12,240 in 2017/18 - the equivalent of 64 every school day.

As such, the charity has called on the Government with their 'Are You There?' campaign to invest more into services for children.

Many organisations in Scotland, including the Mental Health Foundation, See Me, SAMH, Penumbra, Samaritans and The Alliance, play a huge part in helping to break down barriers associated with talking about mental health and together we are making progress, evidenced in part by the increase in demand for support.

The NSPCC sent FOI requests to 66 NHS trusts in England asking for the number of CAMHS referrals they have had from education settings in the last three years (2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18). And raising public awareness about early intervention for mental health problems in young people, he said, is critical for them to be successful later on in their lives.

NSPCC policy officer Alana Ryan told the Guardian: "It is worrying there are so many children being deemed as needing some kind of mental health support and whether or not that is mental health support that meets the clinical support threshold, it's still a need".

Dr Max Davie, from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: "Paediatricians working in the community have also noted a surge in referrals for emotional and behavioural difficulties, often once CAMHS have rejected the referral".

It should be no different for mental health issues, and with effective awareness training, as managers we can do our best to provide support and offer potential options to assist with recovery.

Esther Rantzen, the Childline founder and president said: "We must make sure that Childline is adequately funded so it isn't left vulnerable and can be there for the children who have nowhere else to turn".

'This poignant moment of reflection, a first in United Kingdom radio, is a wonderful opportunity to help us improve how we support each other emotionally'.

In another study published today by Cascade HR, four out of five of 540 United Kingdom participants polled described stress as "a way of life", while two-thirds (67 per cent) said they had felt stressed at work for a week or more at some point in the previous year.

We believe it is crucial that young people can access support without excessive delays whenever they are fearless enough to seek help. A gender divide also emerged: 81 per cent of women felt this way compared to 67 per cent of men.

Research has shown that two thirds of people experience a mental health problem in their lifetimes, and stress is a key factor in this. Other issues that can cause stress, these could be relationships, work or money issues. Frontline healthcare staff in the NHS, particularly those supporting clinical staff, ambulance staff and nurses have the highest absence rates.

Richard Grange, a spokesperson for the Mental Health Foundation, added: "The mental health impact of work can follow us home".

Mr Gariff has received various treatments over the years, and partly credits his love of painting for helping his mental health improve.
