Salmonella Outbreak that Prompted Massive Egg Recall Affects NY and PA

The Indianapolis Star reported the egg recall is one of the largest to occur since 2010, when 500 million eggs were recalled from an Iowa producer amid almost 2,000 reported illnesses linked to salmonella.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, serve, or sell recalled eggs produced by Rose Acre Farms' Hyde County farm.

Rose Acre Farms has 17 facilities in eight states, The Washington Post reported.

Almost three dozen people in nine states have now been sickened by a salmonella outbreak that led to a recall of more than 200 million eggs last month. You can also get the full list of potentially contaminated products from the FDA here.

The US Food and Drug Administration traced the outbreak to a farm in Hyde County, North Carolina, which is part of of Rose Acre Farms, which claims to be the second-largest supplier of eggs in the country and is headquartered in Indiana.

Following Rose Acre Farms' recall, Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. voluntarily recalled eggs purchased from Rose Acre Farms and produced at the Hyde County facility.

The sick people live in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Twenty-two illnesses have been reported so far. The FDA says that they were sold under Walmart, Publix, and Food Lion's store brands, plus a variety of brand names (Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Glenview, Nelms, Sunshine Farms, Sunups), and also turned up in a few restaurant chains like Waffle House. Symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

In 2010, a salmonella outbreak led to the massive recall of more than 1 billion eggs from Iowa farms.
