Skeleton unearthed of man crushed by huge rock in Vesuvius eruption

Officials at the Pompeii archaeological site have announced a dramatic new discovery, the skeleton of a man crushed by an enormous stone while trying to flee the explosion of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. But a spectacular discovery is a grim reminder that heat and suffocation aren't the only ways a volcano can threaten lives.

"The team on site are not just archeologists but experts in many fields; engineers, restorers and (have) the technical tools like drones and 3-D scanners", said Massimo Osanna, general director of the Archeological Park of Pompeii.

But archaeologists have not been able to track down his head, reports The Sun.

To give you an idea of how gruesome this end was, the man's thorax was completely crushed.

In a statement, archaeologists said: "A formidable stone block (perhaps a door jamb), violently thrown by the volcanic cloud, collided with his upper body, crushing the highest part of the thorax and yet-to-be-identified head, which probably lies under the stone block".

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was found on the first floor of a building, above the layer of small stones carried by the cloud.

The man had lesions on his tibia which indicated what experts thought could be a serious bone infection which may have stopped him from escaping at the first signs of an incoming eruption. Many had fled because the volcano had been spewing ash and smoke for days before it erupted, the Telegraph reported.

The remains were found in the recently discovered Alley of Balconies, an extraordinary street of grand houses with mostly intact balconies, some with frescoes retaining their original colours.

Archaeologists have discovered a headless male skeleton during new excavations of Pompeii.
