Sunanda Pushkar death case: Shashi Tharoor booked, calls chargesheet preposterous

Indian parliamentarian and former United Nations diplomat Shashi Tharoor was charged yesterday with abetting the suicide of his wife more than four years after she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a five-star hotel room.

It was filed by Metropolitan magistrate Dharmender Singh under sections 498 A and 306 of the IPC.

Pushkar was found dead in a five-star hotel room in Delhi on January 17, 2014.

On Monday, the Delhi Police has filed a charge sheet in a Delhi court in connection with the death of Sunanda Pushkar. She had injury marks on her hands and cheeks. Swamy added the Delhi Police had not arrested anyone and no custodial interrogation took place, despite post-mortem examination had confirmed Sunanda's death was "unnatural" and "due to poison". "To substantiate that, the psychological profiling of these five characters helped build our case", said a police officer.

But a year later police said new medical reports had led investigators to treat the case as a murder, without naming any suspects.

Pushkar had been suffering from a mysterious illness before her death, but was unable to get it diagnosed despite have herself examined by the best doctors.

In January 2015, an AIIMS toxicology report ruled that Pushkar had died from poisoning. The SIT was formed one year after the FIR was registered in the case. According to initial reports, it was Tharoor who found Pushkar's body and informed the Delhi police. Nalini Singh told the cops that Sunanda Pushkar had asked her to retrieve BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) messages between her husband Shashi Tharoor and Mehr Tarar.

Police, however, maintained the charges against Tharoor were finalised on the basis of "medico-legal and forensic evidence", the newspaper said.

The petition was dismissed by the Delhi HC in October 2017, calling it "politically motivated".

In July past year, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy filed a PIL seeking a time-bound court-monitored probe in the case.
