Superman actress Margot Kidder dies at 69

Superman actress Margot Kidder dies at 69

Kidder starred opposite Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent and his alter ego Superman in the original film as well as the three sequels: "Superman II" in 1980, "Superman III" in 1983 and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" in 1987.

The actress died on Sunday in her home in the northern U.S. state of Montana, according to the Franzen-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory, which did not specify a cause.

Kidder had a debilitating auto accident in 1990 that left her badly in debt, confined her to a wheelchair for most of two years and worsened the mental illness she had struggled with for much of her life. She became a household name after Superman was a massive box office hit in 1978.

It is cited as an essential inspiration by makers of modern day Marvel and DC films.

Superman star Margot Kidder has passed away at age 69.

"We quarreled all the time", Kidder said on May 9 in an interview on radio station WWJ in Detroit, where she had been scheduled to appear at Motor City Comic Con later this month. "These are hard words to write, so simply - you will be so very missed, my dear Margot", he told SyFy. Reeve died in 2004 after being paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair due to a horse riding accident in 1995.

She and Reeve captured something that no amount of blockbuster bluster has duplicated in the superhero dramas that followed.

As for her career in film and television, the Yellowknife-born Kidder was famous by the early '70s, thanks to such films as Brian De Palma's Sisters and the Canadian hit thriller, Black Christmas.

Despite that setback Kidder continued to act on both the silver and small screens, and occasionally on stage.

Kumail Nanjiani wrote, "RIP Margot Kidder".

Hollywood soon beckoned and a move to Los Angeles led to roles on TV shows including "McQueen", "Mod Squad" and "Nichols". They made her what used to be the girlfriend, which kind of ended in the 60s with women's rights.

After three marriages and thousands of dollars in medical bills, Kidder found herself homeless in 1996 as she struggled with bipolar disorder.

"The reality of my life has been grand and wonderful, punctuated by these odd blips and burps of madness", she told People shortly after. She is survived by her daughter Maggie McGuane.
