Teacher, student killed in bus crash

Forty-three people aboard the bus were injured and taken to the hospital, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said during a news conference Thursday afternoon. The children were wearing seat belts, police said. Debris from inside the bus - a pair of Nike shoes, reusable water bottles, a black jacket and snack bags - were strewn about the grass surrounding the severed bus cabin. A "No Turns" sign is posted near the paved area between an opening in two metal guardrails.

Some mothers and children wept as they walked away from the school.

Two other buses in the field trip convoy also carrying fifth-graders on the same trip returned to Paramus, officials said.

Fifth-grade student Theo Ancevski was sitting in the fourth row of the bus and was treated at a hospital for cuts and scrapes.

"A lot of people (inside the bus) were screaming and they were like, hanging from their seat belts", he added.

One student, speaking outside Morristown Medical Center, described a truck hitting from behind before the bus flipped.

The crash completely ripped off the undercarriage of the bus and left it lying demolished with parts spread out along the highway, in the median of Route 80 in Mount Olive Township. Eastern time on the westbound side of the highway near Exit 25, about an hour west of New York City.

Police have not released details of how the crash happened, but the trucking company had had a string of crashes in recent years and a higher than average rate of violations that sidelined its vehicles, according to federal safety data. According to the school district's website, schools were scheduled to open Friday but evening activities were canceled, and PARCC testing was canceled for Friday and next Monday.

"My gut is tied in knots", said Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., whose congressional district includes Paramus.
