US, Gulf states slap new sanctions on Hezbollah leadership

The sanctions by Gulf states follow two USA moves this month to put pressure on Iran's financial networks, including sanctions announced Tuesday aimed at an alleged financial pipeline that moved "hundreds of millions of dollars" from Iran's central bank through an Iraqi bank to Hezbollah.

The Shura Council is Hizbollah's supreme decision-making body responsible for religious, military, and strategic matters and asserts control over administrative, planning, and policy-making authorities.

The move expands United States sanctions against Nasrallah, who was sanctioned by Washington in 1995 for threatening to disrupt the Middle East peace process and again in 2012 over Syria.

These countries also designated eight other Hezbollah-linked people and entities.

The United States and six Gulf Arab states announced sanctions Wednesday on the leadership of Hezbollah, as Washington seeks to step up economic pressure on Iran and its allies in the region after President Donald Trump withdrew this month from the 2015 nuclear deal. "By targeting Hizballah's Shura Council, our nations collectively rejected the false distinction between a so-called "Political Wing" and Hizballah's global terrorist plotting", said Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin.

This is the second TFTC sanction action since the center was announced on May 21, 2017.

Sayyed is the head of "Hezbollah's" Political Council. The group has repeatedly clashed with Israel, and more recently has intervened in the Syrian civil war, fighting on the side of President Bashar al-Assad and his allies Iran and Russian Federation. It also plans to reinstate all the sanctions that had been lifted under the nuclear deal.

It was the third round of sanctions announced by Washington since the United States pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in defiance of worldwide warnings for the White House not to harm the landmark agreement.

Iran's foreign minister on Thursday lashed out on Twitter at the U.S. and Saudi Arabia for imposing sanctions on leaders of its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

Hezbollah, which was founded after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 and is classified as a terrorist organization by the US, has faced off with Israel across the decades, including in a month-long war in 2006.
