US Northeast storms kill two, snarl transport, cause power outages

Two people were fatally struck by falling trees in CT; two others were fatally struck by trees in Newburgh, in Orange County, where an 11-year-old girl died after a tree fell on her outside her home, ABC 7 reports.

The powerful thunderstorms that swept through the Northeast on Tuesday brought torrential rain and marble-sized hail and knocked out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses. As the girl and her mother returned from getting groceries, gusts of winds slammed shut the doors of their SUV, trapping the girl in the front seat of the vehicle right as a tree fell, The Washington Post reported, citing police.

Danbury's Mayor Mark Boughton said that rescuers had to take a boat to get to the man, because the house was inaccessible due to downed trees.

Officials in CT expect full power restoration will take days and 17 state roads there remain closed due to downed trees and power lines, the Courant said. Her 3-year-old passenger did not appear to be injured. Almost 500,000 customers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Virginia were without power by late Tuesday night, fewer power outages than earlier Tuesday, tracking service PowerOutage.us said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says two people are dead and about 157,000 power outages are reported following the ferocious wind, rain and hail storm that bore down on New York's lower Hudson Valley.
