USA urges release of detainees as show of sincerity by N. Korea

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said his secret meeting with Kim earlier this month gave him hope there was a "real opportunity" to end North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Kim also expressed optimism about his meeting with Trump, Moon's spokesman Yoon Young-chan said.

Moon and Kim held a historic summit last week at the border village of Panmunjom and agreed to seek "complete" denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and push for declaring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War this year.

Kim Dae-jung won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his role in the first summit.

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop told ABC radio today President Trump deserved to be honoured if he did help broker peace.

The possible two-year denuclearization agreement would need "full, complete, total disclosure of everything related to their nuclear program with a full global verification", said John Bolton, the President's National Security Adviser.

It can not be said for sure whether the North Korean leader's gesture during the recent summit was from his confidence based on the completed nuclear weapons of the North or from his reality check following the United States' maximum pressure and engagement strategy. Trump on Saturday touted his ability to achieve a nuclear deal with the North's regime at a campaign-style rally in MI, grinning and nodding as his supporters chanted "Nobel!".

While Trump said "numerous countries" are in the mix, last week he said only two or or three sites are being considered.

Trump is preparing for his own summit with Kim, which he said would take place in the next three to four weeks.

Kim seemed markedly different from former North Korean leaders - his father Kim Jong Il and grandfather Kim Il Sung, people on the street in Seoul said on Monday.

But the deal eventually collapsed after North Korea refused to accept US-proposed verification methods, and the country went on to conduct its second nuclear test detonation in May 2009.

China is North Korea's only major economic partner, but trade has declined by about 90 percent following Beijing's implementation of economic sanctions imposed over the North's nuclear and missile tests.

JULIE Bishop says Donald Trump will deserve the highest praise if he can help broker peace with North Korea but she remains sceptical of the rogue nation's promise to denuclearise. Before the summit, only 14.7 percent of those polled said they did, research agency Realmeter said on Monday.

The summit was a result of the coinciding interests of the two leaders, that is, the North Korean leader feeling threatened with US economic sanctions and military pressure intensifying against North Korea's nuclear weapons and the South Korean President focusing on South Korea's leading role in issues related to the Korean Peninsula.

It would also save the North the potential embarrassment of having to borrow a plane.
