Venezuela Launches Commission to Investigate Prison Riot

Venezuela Launches Commission to Investigate Prison Riot

"This has been taken over peacefully by all the political prisoners and all the prisoners who are abducted here, who are tortured daily", a man who identified himself as a prisoner said in a video.

Authorities of Venezuela claim that Holt was working with the USA government to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro, a plan they say involved him and his wife stockpiling weapons.

A Utah man imprisoned in Venezuela is pleading for People' assist getting out of a Caracas jail the place he has been held for 2 years with out trial. "They're saying they want me as their guarantee", Holt said in one of the videos, without clarifying who was allegedly trying to harm him. "Josh and his family have suffered far too long", the statement said. How long do my kids have to go on asking for their mummy and daddy.

Josh Holt, 26, can be seen in a Facebook video pleading for help from the USA government after claiming that the prison "has fallen" to people wanting to kill him. "The Venezuelan government is directly responsible for their security and we will hold them responsible if anything happens to them", the embassy tweeted in Spanish. People here are dying we need help please send me help please send people to save me.

In 2016 Holt traveled to Venezuela to marry Thamara Candela.

The couple were arrested at her family's apartment in Caracas after police alleged he was stockpiling weapons - an assault weapon and grenades - accusations which have been refuted by Mr Holt and his family.

In two 20-second videos filmed on a mobile phone and posted on his Facebook page today, a visibly distraught Joshua Holt suggested his patience was running out with the US Government, which has made his release a top priority in its dealings with Venezuela's socialist Government.

The US embassy released a photo of Todd Robinson, the top American diplomat in Venezuela, leaving the foreign ministry and saying he had received no information from the Government about the "riot". That delegation spoke to a representative of the prisoners to respond to their requests'. Local and social media, as well as one witness interviewed by LAHT, report tear gas and buckshot being deployed inside “El Helicoide”.

Relatives of inmates react angrily outside the detention centre where a riot occurred. The disturbance, the extent of which was not known, came as Venezuelans are on edge days before Sunday's presidential election, which Maduro is widely expected to win despite a crushing economic crisis marked by widespread shortages and hyperinflation.

The US has also threatened to impose crippling oil sanctions on Venezuela if President Maduro goes ahead with the election, with several of his main opponents having been barred from running.

That appeared to have sparked "some of sort of internal fight", said Alfredo Romero, a lawyer and activist with the Penal Forum rights group, speaking in front of the Helicoide.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the US Embassy in Venezuela said: "We are anxious about the riot in the Helicoide".

"Joshua Holt and other US citizens are in danger", he added.

Todd Robinson, the chargé d'affaires at the USA embassy, went to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry for information, the embassy added.
