Will Smith Details How He Became the 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'

'It was a tragedy, it went, like, double plastic. Being famous and broke is a shit combination because you're still famous and [people] recognize you but they recognize you while you sitting next to them on the bus'.

Hollywood star Will Smith has revealed he did "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" because he was broke and in trouble with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). I had spent all my cash and I didn't overlook however I didn't pay the IRS.

The rapper shot to fame as rapper The Fresh Prince with childhood friend DJ Jazzy Jeff in 1987 with their debut album, Rock The House, and their follow-up album He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper went triple-platinum in 1989.

'I met Benny and he pitches me the idea for this show, and I'm like, "I'm not an actor"'. But if not for some serious money trouble, Smith's career may have gone a far different direction.

It seems so long ago that he was the King Of Hollywood, giving even Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford a run for their money with a string of hits that included Bad Boys, Independence Day and Men In Black.

The legendary music producer acquiesced, saying Smith might meet him in two weeks for an audition or he "might take 10 minutes proper now and you would change your life without end".

Speaking of the impromptu audition Will said: 'I was like fuck it then.

Following his audition, the rapper says he impressed Jones and the head of NBC at the time, Brandon Tartikoff, and was given the role of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's titular character. "So the legal professionals go right into a limo and so they're drawing up the primary deal for The Recent Prince of Bel Air".

The father-of-three continued: 'The IRS took all that stuff, so I was like, broke, broke, broke.

According to the rapper, he was just a flat broke celebrity before he became the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

"The moral of this story is always say yes, and listen to your girlfriend".
